Since 2010 the Best of the Midwest Combine has proven to be a must attend event for high school prospects looking to showcase their talents along with those who are looking for the next top prospects to write about.
This year was no different as founder Greg Brookey had another great turnout of top-level talent to watch.
We look at some of the names that stepped forward from Sunday’s event.
Class of 2020
Fleming can do many things for a team. While he took reps at quarterback and receiver. Some may look to use him as a receiver, but we feel his future is brightest in the secondary. 40-yard dash times get splashed all over the place from events, but Fleming will light up a stopwatch when he runs. Already with a few mid-major offers, Fleming will soon see those replaced with Power Five offers. Fleming walked away with the events overall MVP honor. Fleming added offers from Toledo and Tulane following his MVP performance.
Class of 2020
Wrather has seen his offer list grow the past few weeks as Mid-American Conference programs continue to extend their desire to get him on their campus. The offer trend should continue but with interest coming from some Power Five programs soon. One of three offensive linemen to earn MVP honors, Wrather has a solid frame to work with as he can still add bulk and strength without losing his athletic ability. Showed great technique during drills and one-on-one drills. One of Ohio’s top prospects.
St. Xavier HS
Class of 2020
Last year Lang caught a few eyes at this event. This year, he opened them showing why he’s a legit Division One tight end about to bust out. Lang continues to add bulk and strength to his now 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame. He’s blessed with great hands, continued improvement in route running and surprised many with his willingness to mix it up when brought over to the offensive line / defensive line one-on-one drills showing his willingness to block and toughness. It this last part that we feel separates Lang from some of the other tight ends in the 2020 class.
Madison Southern HS
Class of 2020
Over the years of the Best of the Midwest Combine one family has used the event to springboard college interest. It started with current University of Kentucky center Drake Jackson who dominated the event over the years. Younger brother Dane Jackson is now the one making a name for himself as a center prospect to watch. While he only reports an offer from Georgetown College, he’s got the technique to surprise higher level program. The knock on the younger Jackson will be his listed height of 6-foot.
Romeo High School
Class of 2021
We saw Jones recently at the Rise Combine at Legacy in Michigan. At the Best of the Midwest, we found a more confident prospect especially during one-on-one drills. One of the coaches Jones worked with was Deyshawn Bond and the former Cincinnati Bearcat and Indianapolis Colt was impressed. Jones is still raw on technique, but you can see all the tools are there for such a young player.
Belleville High School
Class of 2022
Belleville has been loaded with talent over the past few years and that is not stopping by the way freshman Ja’Kobe Watkins performed on Sunday. Listed at 6-foot-2, 265-pounds, Watkins was probably the soundest technically of all the offensive linemen. Backed away from no one and won most of his reps showing solid feet, balance and an understanding of how to use his hands. Something we don’t normally see from such a young player.
St. Catharines, ON
Royal Imperial Collegiate of Canada
The one defensive lineman to give offensive linemen fits during the day was Mesidor out of Canada. Great explosion off the line with a quick and strong punch and the ability to use multiple moves made him almost impossible to stop. Depending on the scheme, we see Mesidor as an inside player at the next level as he’ll need to continue to add bulk to his frame. Earned defensive line MVP honors.
Northmont High School
Not the first time we’ve seen Cameron and each time we do see him, we see his growth. Has the length you look for from a defensive end but needs to continue adding bulk. Show quick feet but is still raw. However, once everything comes together, should be an even more dominating player.
There were many more players worthy of having their names listed in this report and we’re sure you’ll hear about many of them going forward.
