MT HEALTHY PRODUCT DAVID MONTGOMERY A BEAR

We interviewed David Montgomery early in his high school career and here is that interview to give you more insight on who the newest Chicago Bear is.

HIGH SCHOOL

In high school Montgomery was a quarterback at Mount Healthy High School for head coach Arvie Crouch. Montgomery posted great numbers during his prep career with over 6,600 rushing yards and 91 touchdowns. Was lightly recruited with only a handful of offers from Mid-American Conference until late in the recruiting process. Added bigger offers late but Matt Campbell and assistant coach Alex Golesh recruited Montgomery early and made him a priority once Campbell was hired at Iowa State.  Biggest question coming out of high school was how Montgomery would transition from quarterback to a traditional running back.

COLLEGE

Montgomery wasted little time in showing why Campbell and his staff wanted him in a Cyclones uniform as he played in 12 games leading the team in rushing with 563 yards and two scores. His rushing total was the second-best recorded by a freshman in Iowa State history. Following up in year two Montgomery would post 1,146 yards rushing and 11 rushing touchdowns while starting all 13 games on the season. In his final season he started 11 of 12 games rushing for 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ended career with 15 100-yard rushing games and 2,925 career rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. Also showed he could catch the ball out of the backfield with 71 career receptions.

PRE DRAFT

Experts had Montgomery slated to go in the second or third round because of concerns about his overall burst. However, his ability to get yards after contact and not fumble had scouts looking at him as a sure handed tough back capable of standing up to the rigors of the NFL. While Montgomery was never a track speed guy, he’s always been a very elusive runner with the ball in his hands. Great football instincts with the ability to stop, start and explode using his powerful leg drive and balance.

EVALUATION

For the Chicago Bears this is a great addition in the third round as they look to replace Jordan Howard by trading up to get Montgomery. Because of his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, Montgomery can be an every down back in the NFL. In the Bears offensive scheme Montgomery should have a chance to excel using his balance, quick feet and great vision. Like he’s been doing since high school, Montgomery is not easy to bring down and should continue to have defenders miss tackles.
