WYOMING QB EVAN PRATER

We preview the second round of the Ohio High School Athletic Associations football playoffs with a focus on the Division Four teams from Southwest Ohio in Region 16. Games are set for Saturday night.

DIVISION FOUR

REGION 16

#1 WYOMING VS #5 INDIAN HILL @ PRINCETON HS

In this match-up neither side likes each other and not afraid to let everyone know it. Wyoming has been the team standing in the way of Indian Hill winning Cincinnati Hills League titles the past four seasons as the Cowboys have been impressive with an overall record of 50-2 including a current 26 game winning streak. The Cowboys last lost a game on November 17, 2017 in the third round of the playoffs against Clinton Massie and the last time Indian Hill beat them came during the 2015 season when the Braves pulled a double win including in the playoffs.

This is a Week Ten rematch the Cowboys won 21-18 as quarterback Evan Prater (Cincinnati pledge) rushed for 303 yards and three touchdowns. While Prater can take over a game running the ball, he’s also capable of taking it over with his arm and on the season has looked to a pair of junior wide receivers in Joop Mitchell (652 yds 7 TDs) and junior receiver Brennan Pagan (506 yds 7 TDs) when doing so.

If the Braves defense can contain Prater this could be the game, they step forward with the win and advance to play another week.

However, to win the Braves must play solid on both sides of the ball especially offense with senior quarterback Tre Lopez (1,445 passing yds 14 TDs, 987 rushing yds 16 TDs) who was solid in the last match-up. Lopez has some weapons of his own with Amari Whitehead and Luke Hammond. FirstStarFootballReport.com was on hand for the Week Ten game coming away feeling junior running back/linebacker Charlie Sumerel who only had three carries for 22 yards and one reception for 11 yards could have done even more if given the chance.

Defensively the Braves look to senior defensive lineman David Ryu to lead the way with his 6.5 sacks on the season. Junior Will Klekamp is a two-way player who posted 66 tackles and three sacks on the season and Whitehead (3 INTs) and Charlie DiGennero (2 INTs) are joined by last week’s hero Alex Lindberg who has missed time this season but came up big against Kenton with two interceptions he returned for scores.

This has all the makings of another battle until the end and should be a game to consider going to if you’re looking for something to do on Saturday night.

#6 ROGER BACON VS #7 VALLEY VIEW @ LAKOTA WEST HS

There was a time when Valley View was one of the most dominating teams in Southwest Ohio under Jay Niswonger. Those days may be gone but the Spartans are a team to watch coming off an impressive 42-28 win over Clinton-Massie in round one.

Senior quarterback Cade Cradlebaugh came up big last week going 13-of-19 for 305 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 69 yards and a score. Cradlebaugh has been solid this season while also leading the team in rushing with 669 yards and six scores. Junior receiver Troy Coulter has been the main target and the 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver has delivered with 39 receptions for 753 yards and nine touchdowns this season.

However, the Spartans will meet up with one of the top teams this season in Roger Bacon and standout junior running back Corey Kiner (2,024 Yds 39 TDs) who can also beat you on special teams with a touchdown on a punt return and two scores on kickoff returns. Senior quarterback Tyler Bullock needs to take care of the ball when he’s not handing it to Kiner as he’s thrown for 794 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions this season. Roger Bacon makes it no secret Kiner is their main weapon with leading receivers being Jah’Mal Hutsell (12 receptions, 193 yards 1 TD) and junior Ryan Hallau (13 receptions 202 yards 2 TDs).

On defense Wisconsin pledge James Thompson Jr. plays both ways but can cause havoc off the edge with his team leading five sacks on the season. Most teams focus on Thompson allowing others to clean up on the stat sheet.

Another junior getting early college interest is linebacker Nijal Mooney.

Make no mistake there are other weapons on the Roger Bacon roster but Kiner is a special kind of player and can score anytime he touches the ball. In his last four games Kiner has rushed for 1,134 yards and 23 touchdowns on all of 59 carries.

For Valley View to win they must stop Kiner and only one team, Hamilton Badin was up to the task holding Kiner to 46 yards and one touchdown.
