Valentine Surprised by Offers

As Carrington Valentine continues to add scholarship offers, he knows it wasn’t too long ago when he wondered if college programs would see his talents. Now with double digit offers, Valentine is surprised by how many schools have interest.

“I was kind of worried when I switched positions to be honest,” said Valentine. “I wasn’t sure what moving to defense would do to me, but it’s kind of played into my favor. I didn’t see myself as a defensive back until I started looking into it and looking at my build. Then I started playing it and enjoyed playing it.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back talked about several of his offers.

They were my first offer and I went up for a Junior Day and then they came to school to watch my basketball practice. I got a message to call Coach (Chuck) Martin and he offered. It was exciting to get that first offer as it’s something I’ve worked hard for as I’ve always wanted to play college football. So, I was very happy.

“I really like their academics and that is what it’s really all about, getting a degree. I like their facilities and their coaches, and they showed a lot of respect to my family while we visited.

“I visited UK back during the season and then attended a Junior Day to watch the basketball team play Tennessee. I got a chance to hang with Coach (Steve) Clinkscale and he’s a great guy. They are another school with a program on the rise. I also have a good friend that goes there.”

“I visited for a Junior Day. Again, very cold, very cold. I got to hang with Coach (Paul) Haynes and Coach (Mark) Dantonio. I like what they do on defense and they’ve had a lot of Moeller guys go there and do well. I live in Cincinnati and it gets cold here, but that’s a different kind of cold there. Coach Dantonio brought me into his office and we sat down, and he talked about the kind of guys he likes and said he felt I fit their program. He said he didn’t know if I was a corner or safety and that he likes to recruit the defensive backs himself.”

“I’ve not visited yet, but plan to during the spring. Their offer was a surprise to be honest. I’d been talking with some big schools, but for them to be my first Power Five offer, it really stuck out to me.”

“I went down for a basketball game and I’ve got some friends from Cincinnati there. I really enjoyed getting to know their new coaching staff and had a chance to play some video games with the coaches. I also like the city as it’s kind of like Cincinnati. It felt like home.”

“I visited and it was cold, very cold. “I liked their academics and facilities. Basically, I liked how Coach (Jason) Candle handles himself.”

“I’m hoping to visit there this weekend. I’ve been talking with Coach (William) Inge and Coach (Brandon) Shelby their corners coach.”

“Another school I’m hoping to visit this weekend. I’ve been there for basketball but have not really seen much of their football facilities.”

“I know it’s warm there and they have great academics. “I think they might be the smallest school in the ACC, but they’ve had some great athletes go there like Tim Duncan and Chris Paul. I’m hoping to visit them during the spring.

Other schools Valentine is looking to visit that have offered include Purdue, Rutgers, Kent State and his two latest offers Minnesota and Western Michigan.

Is there a dream school he’s looking to earn an offer from?

“I don’t really have a dream school,” he stressed. “I’m looking for a school that is right academically for me and then athletically.”

First Star Football Report expects many more schools to show interest in the coming weeks and months.
